First: Something New! Our Events Newsletter
As many of you know, over the past few years, we have increased the number of virtual events that we are offering to readers. We have a rather huge invite list that has become unwieldy to write via regular email. Thus, we now have an Events Newsletter, which we will send around the first of the month. While we mention our events in this newsletter, if you want to plan a couple of months ahead, sign up here for our new Events Newsletter. It will come from [email protected], so drop that address in your address book!
One of the things I love about my book group is that we adapt. Our book group leader will say that a night we planned to meet does not work for her, and then we will chime in on what alternatives are available to make our meeting happen. We often vote on a night to meet. We also vote on what to read. And if someone misses a meeting, we will have a conversation about the book that they missed when we get together again.
In February, we are reading THE BERRY PICKERS by Amanda Peters, and I loved that the American Library Association recently selected it as the winner of the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. I talked to Amanda earlier this month; be sure to watch or listen to the interview if you haven't already.
Last Wednesday night, we hosted our first “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event of 2024. Our guest was Lisa See, and she talked about LADY TAN’S CIRCLE OF WOMEN, which was a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick when it released last June. She explained how she came to discover Tan Yunxian, a female physician from 15th-century China, and why she decided to write a novel based on her extraordinary life.
Two readers, Debbie and Michelle, appeared on camera to ask Lisa about her interest in ancient Chinese medicine and the role of women in it, as well as how a new book idea comes to her. Michelle learned that Lisa’s mother, Carolyn See, wrote a book called MAKING A LITERARY LIFE and was curious to know if Lisa followed her mother’s writing advice.
We also fielded some fabulous questions from the audience that touched on a number of additional topics, including the book’s gorgeous cover and Lisa’s lovely necklaces, which an eagle-eyed reader noticed she wears to all of her events. Plus, Lisa shared a shoe that would have been worn on a bound foot! Our attendees hailed from 37 states and Canada, which we were thrilled to see. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
I am so excited to announce that Shelby Van Pelt will be our next “Bookaccino Live” Book Group guest. The event will be held on Wednesday, February 28th at 8pm ET, and you can sign up here for it. We will be talking about her debut novel, REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES. This instant New York Times bestseller and a “Read with Jenna” Today Show Book Club pick released in 2022. It appears on our Top 30 Most Requested Guides of 2023 (#9), the Top 10 Books Read with Your Group in 2023 (#2), and the Top 10 Books Read Outside Your Group in 2023 (#3).
Just as we did last Wednesday night, there will be a two-part Q&A session after I talk to Shelby. For the first part, those who are asking a question “on camera” will be featured. This includes spending time with Shelby backstage in our virtual green room before the show starts. If you would like to ask your question "live on screen" this way, please email me with the subject line "Shelby" by noon ET on February 28th. Be sure to include your name, city and state, as well as your question. If you do not want to appear on camera but still would like to ask a question, please note that you want to be off camera, and share your question --- adding your name, city and state.
Back in November on Bookreporter, we gave 25 readers the chance to win an advance copy of Kristin Hannah’s upcoming novel, THE WOMEN, and let us know their thoughts on it. We received terrific feedback on the book, which releases on February 6th and will be a Bets On selection. Click here to take a look at those comments. I cannot wait for more of you to read it!
The winners also submitted questions for Kristin, many of which I will be asking her during a LIVE “Bookreporter Talks To” interview on Wednesday, March 6th at 7pm ET. We also are giving them the option of asking their questions on camera. We will share the signup link to this special evening event in the next newsletter, but we wanted to let you know about it now so you have it on your radar.
I am looking forward to seeing Kristin at her tour stop in New York City at Symphony Space on Thursday, February 8th at 7pm. She will be in conversation with novelist, editor and columnist Elisabeth Egan (A WINDOW OPENS), with a performance from the novel by Amy Ryan (“Only Murders in the Building”). Let me know if you plan to be there as well!
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Ashley Elston, whose instant New York Times bestseller, FIRST LIE WINS, is Reese’s Book Club pick for January and a Bets On selection. Ashley shares how she came to write this book and why the time was right for her to work on it. She explains what she learned about storytelling from the decade she spent as a wedding photographer, as well as her time writing YA novels, where readers keep authors on their toes.
Ashley wrote the start of the book, and it looks much like what people are reading now. She discusses how the backstories came about, including one that was added quite late in the process. I read an early paragraph that points out the significance of the title. Plus, Ashley reveals what she knows about the status of the Hulu series adaptation of the book and fills us in on the script that she has read. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
Alex Michaelides’ third psychological thriller, THE FURY, follows his instant New York Times bestsellers THE SILENT PATIENT and THE MAIDENS. It’s January’s #1 Indie Next pick and an upcoming Bets On selection.
Inspired by both the author’s Greek-Cypriot heritage and his previous work as a Hollywood screenwriter, the story revolves around a group of friends --- Lana Farrar, a reclusive ex-movie star; Kate Crosby, a celebrated British theater actress; and Elliot Chase, a witty playwright --- whose idyllic Easter getaway on Lana's private Greek island takes a dark turn with a shocking murder.
Don’t miss my Bets On commentary in the next newsletter. In the meantime, you can take a look at the discussion guide here and our review on Bookreporter here.
January’s “Good Morning America” Book Club selection and Simon & Schuster’s Book Club Favorites pick is THE STORM WE MADE, a sweeping epic about an unlikely spy, a secret love affair, and the uncontrollable forces that will test even the most unbreakable ties.
Set in Malaya (now Malaysia) during World War II, Vanessa Chan’s debut novel chronicles a mother and her children as they grapple with the consequences of colonial power and the shocking repercussions that follow for their family and their country. Spanning years of pain and triumph, it’s about the horrors of war, the fraught relationships between the colonized and their oppressors, and the ambiguity of right and wrong when survival is at stake.
Be sure to check out the guide and our Bookreporter review. And if you missed the interview that Book Club Favorites conducted with Vanessa, you can click here to watch it.
We also have added guides for these four books:
-
DIVA: Daisy Goodwin brings to life a woman whose extraordinary talent, unremitting drive and natural chic made her a legend. But it was only in confronting the heartbreak of losing Aristotle Onassis, the man she loved, that Maria Callas found her true voice and went on to triumph.
-
FAMILY FAMILY: Laurie Frankel’s own experience adopting her daughter led her to see that most adoptive narratives are represented as tragic. Her new novel is a fresh take on adoption where the book’s protagonist confidently states that she knew placing her child was setting them up for a better life, the same way she was setting herself up for a better life.
-
ONLY IF YOU’RE LUCKY: This lyrical, dark academia novel from Stacy Willingham --- whose previous books are A FLICKER IN THE DARK and ALL THE DANGEROUS THINGS --- captures the adrenaline-filled insides of female friendships in those all-important early years of college.
-
WHERE YOU END: Abbott Kahler formerly wrote as Karen Abbott, whose bestselling works of nonfiction include SIN IN THE SECOND CITY and THE GHOSTS OF EDEN PARK. In her fiction debut, an unusual form of amnesia upends the lives of identical twins, forcing them to face the indelible, dangerous shadow of the past.

New Guide: THE FURY by Alex Michaelides
January’s #1 Indie Next Pick
and an Upcoming Bookreporter.com Bets On Title
THE FURY by Alex Michaelides (Psychological Thriller)
Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex–movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island. I tell you this because you may think you know this story. You probably read about it at the time --- it caused a real stir in the tabloids, if you remember. It had all the necessary ingredients for a press sensation: a celebrity; a private island cut off by the wind…and a murder. We found ourselves trapped there overnight. Our old friendships concealed hatred and a desire for revenge. What followed was a game of cat and mouse. The night ended in violence and death, as one of us was found murdered. But who am I? My name is Elliot Chase, and I’m going to tell you a story unlike any you’ve ever heard.

Her eldest daughter Jujube, who works at a tea house frequented by drunk Japanese soldiers, becomes angrier by the day. A decade prior, Cecily had been desperate to be more than a housewife to a low-level bureaucrat in British-colonized Malaya. DIVA by Daisy Goodwin (Historical Fiction)
In the glittering and ruthlessly competitive world of opera, Maria Callas was known simply as la divina: the divine one. But her fame was hard-won. Raised in Nazi-occupied Greece by a mother who mercilessly exploited her golden voice, she learned early in life to protect herself from those who would use her for their own ends. When she met the fabulously rich Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, for the first time in her life, she believed she’d found someone who saw the woman within the legendary soprano. She fell desperately in love. And then suddenly, it was over. The international press announced that Aristotle Onassis would marry the most famous woman in the world, former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, leaving Maria to pick up the pieces.
