Connecting with Readers --- Virtually --- in So Many Ways
We have done so many events these past few weeks, which has given us lots of time to connect with readers. In the span of just eight days, we did five events for book lovers and librarians. It was both exciting and exhilarating --- and yes, by the end I was a wee bit cross-eyed from the pace. I saw so much enthusiasm for books out now and those that are coming. We are sharing links to so much this month, which will give you an opportunity to have this same kind of experience...with just the exciting and exhilarating part!
On May 14th, we hosted our 10th Annual Book Group Speed Dating event for booksellers, librarians and book club leaders. Representatives from 21 publishers presented more than 75 titles perfect for book groups that will be published between June and November of this year. You can watch the event in its entirety here. We will be breaking out the presentations by publisher and including links to their individual videos in the early June newsletter.
If you would like to know more about the books, click here to access a PDF of the PowerPoint presentation of the featured titles, as well as an Excel spreadsheet that lists the books both by publisher and alphabetically by title. Included in the video is a retrospective of the last 10 years of Book Group Speed Dating, where we call out 12 books from each year that we know have resonated with readers over the past decade. A spreadsheet of these titles also can be found on this page. Many thanks to our fabulous producer Austin for putting together such an impressive montage --- and for saying “great idea” when I suggested a 10th anniversary retrospective!
As you can see, there are some terrific books releasing this summer and fall that you will want to add to your TBR lists!
Last Thursday night, we hosted our fourth "Bookaccino Live" Book Group event. Our guest was Robert Kolker, the author of HIDDEN VALLEY ROAD: Inside the Mind of an American Family, which is a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick. Bob gave us a fabulous interview when the book was first published last year. It was wonderful to pick up a conversation with him this year and talk more in-depth about the book, as well as hear some terrific reactions and questions from attendees. Click here to watch the interview and here to listen to the podcast.
I heard from many readers after the event, including Tracy, who said, “Wow, that was a great interview. You asked good questions that kept Kolker talking. I read HIDDEN VALLEY ROAD on a plane out to New Mexico and back. What a read! So glad I signed on to listen.” Jill said, “You did it again! The Kolker interview was great. That was an amazing book.” Thanks to our readers Michelle, Debbie and Lisa who joined us on camera to share their questions.
A reminder that next month's “Bookaccino Live” afternoon event will take place on Wednesday, June 9th at 2pm ET. I will talk about a number of titles coming out between June 8th and July 6th, along with a few from August, that I would like to get on your radar. Click here to sign up. Those attending the live event will be asked to answer a survey about the books from the presentation that they are most interested in reading and will be eligible to win a prize.
As promised, the video for our May afternoon event is now available on our YouTube channel. Here I presented 30 books releasing from May 11th to June 1st, along with seven July titles, that I thought would appeal to you. Click here to see a list of all these books.
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Laura Dave, whose new domestic thriller, THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME, is Reese’s Book Club pick for May and a Bets On selection. Laura and I rolled from topic to topic. We talked a lot about the writing of this book, which she started back in 2012, though she had conceptualized the main theme earlier than that, and how the story changed along the way. She is adapting the novel into a limited series for Hello Sunshine (it will run on Apple TV+) with her husband, Josh Singer, who wrote the screenplay for Spotlight --- and hearing their plans for that was fun, including their mega-lead star. We then bonded over our mutual love of cooking and how that is a part of her life. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.
Drum roll for audiobooks... Last month, I moderated a panel as part of the Newburyport Literary Festival featuring three prolific audiobook narrators. Imogen Church has narrated her own writing as well as the work of others, and January LaVoy and Robert Petkoff are two successful actors who have discovered and thrived in an additional career in the audiobook world. We discussed the ins and outs of audiobook work and what the incredible growth in the industry (the audiobook market is predicted to reach $3.5 billion this year) means for how we consume books and how publishers present them to us. Click here for our conversation. Above you can see me with (from left to right) January, freelance writer and editor Leslie Hendrickson (who introduced us), Robert and Imogen. If you’d like to take a look at the festival’s other events, they're all available for viewing on this page. They had some terrific programming.
We have added SEVEN new guides to this late-month update. We’re mentioning them here, but you can read much more about them later in this newsletter.

THAT SUMMER: Jennifer Weiner follows up last year’s BIG SUMMER (a Bets On pick) with this twisty novel about surviving our pasts, confronting our futures and the sustaining bonds of friendship.
On a personal note, you may have heard the heartbreaking news that Jen’s mom, Fran, passed away on Mother’s Day after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March. Along with being a loving mother, Fran was always great material for Jen and was a frequent attendee at her events. In fact, I remember a hilarious story about Fran being in the audience during a Barnes & Noble Book Club event when Jen’s book was the selection and asking all kinds of questions, but never identifying herself as Jen’s mother. Fran’s obituary is here, and I share it because it is written completely in Jen’s style.
-
THE NEWCOMER: In Mary Kay Andrews’ new summer page-turner, the death of her sister Tanya sends a panicked Letty Carnahan and her young niece to The Murmuring Surf Motel, as she is convinced that Tanya’s ex committed the murder.
Last Thursday night, Wade Rouse, who writes as Viola Shipman, was in conversation with Mary Kay Andrews for his weekly show, "Wine & Words with Wade," on the Viola Shipman Facebook page. Wade talked about his latest Viola book, THE CLOVER GIRLS, and MKA discussed THE NEWCOMER. They were terrific, with lots of energy and some shared experiences. You can see it here.
-
THE WOMAN WITH THE BLUE STAR: Inspired by true events, Pam Jenoff’s latest historical novel --- a Bets On selection --- revolves around the risky friendship between Sadie Gault, a young woman who takes refuge with her pregnant mother in the sewers beneath the Kraków Ghetto as the Nazis begin to ship Jews to the camps during World War II, and Ella, a Polish girl who brings them food and supplies.
I had the pleasure of chatting with Pam recently for a “Bookreporter Talks To” interview. She talked to me about finding the kernel of this story and how her experiences living in Poland shaped her thoughts on the narrative. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. Also, you can see my Bets On commentary here.
-
THE BREAK-UP BOOK CLUB: With the help of books, laughter and the joy of ever-evolving friendships, Wendy Wax’s four female characters find the courage to navigate new and surprising chapters of their lives as they seek their own versions of happily-ever-after. I look forward to interviewing Wendy soon!
-
THE PHOTOGRAPHER: An upcoming Bets On selection, Mary Dixie Carter’s debut psychological thriller is about a young woman who photographs the birthday party of a child from a privileged family, and then insinuates herself into their lives. Readers spend a lot of time inside her head, and it’s one place full of dark imagination. You can read my Bets On commentary in the next newsletter.

UNDER THE MAGNOLIAS: Mega-bestselling author Francine Rivers has wonderful praise for T. I. Lowe’s latest novel, in which a teenager must hold her family together after her mother dies giving birth to twins: "T. I. writes with amazing grace and beautifully depicts the cost of keeping secrets when help might be available. This story is filled with rich, lovable characters, each rendered with profound compassion. Austin is an admirable young woman --- flawed, but faithful to her family --- and Vance Cumberland is another Michael Hosea, offering unconditional, life-long love.”
Recently I attended an event with Francine and T. I. Lowe (whose real name is Tonya). In conversation with Karen Watson, their editor, they talked about writing --- and life. Francine has a big movie coming based on her bestselling novel, REDEEMING LOVE, and she talked about being on set for that in Africa right before the pandemic hit. Luckily, unlike many other films, shooting was done before the world shut down. Tonya talked about the road to getting published, and she had us all laughing about her various adventures. She definitely has spunk and spirit, and hearing her talk about it made me want to read her book!
-
THE FORGER’S FORGERY: Clay G. Small’s second book is historical fiction based on the infamous Dutch forger Han van Meegeren. Henry Lindon --- who Small introduced in his 2017 debut novel, HEELS OVER HEAD --- travels to Amsterdam where he will work as a visiting professor. He soon discovers that van Meegeren, who was born in 1899, is about to play a part in his own personal drama. Click here for a Q&A with Small where he talks more about the book, why he wrote it, and his favorite character and scenes.
Book Club Event News
Oprah delivered the keynote speech at this week’s U.S. Book Show, a three-day virtual trade event sponsored by Publishers Weekly. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Oprah’s Book Club, and Oprah revealed that her next pick will be announced on June 15th. She said, “[L]et me tell you… if anything in the world makes me optimistic, it’s the discovery of an emerging writer, someone whose vision creates a shift in how the reader sees the world. And I know you all share that joy in turning the pages, feeling, ‘Wow, that sentence just blew my mind!’ I love it when that happens. Or ‘hmm...never thought of it that way before.’ Or --- ‘no, please don’t let anything bad happen to that character!’”
This Tuesday, June 1st at 3pm ET, Chris Bohjalian will be discussing his new thriller, HOUR OF THE WITCH --- the Barnes & Noble Book Club pick for May --- live on B&N’s Facebook page with Jodi Picoult. Actress Kaley Cuoco, who stars in the HBO series adaptation of Bohjalian’s novel, THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT, will also appear for a short chat.
Speaking of TV Book Adaptations...
We found out yesterday that "Firefly Lane", the hit Netflix series based on Kristin Hannah's bestselling novel, is returning for a second season! Its two stars, Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke, announced the renewal via a Zoom video where they also answered questions from fans about the show. You can watch the big announcement here.
