A New Year of Reading --- and Discussions!

Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful holiday and made some wonderful memories.

Before we turn the page on 2015, here’s a quick reminder that now is your last chance to share your favorite books of last year, as we’re working on compiling a reader-generated list of favorites. Click here and take a quick moment to let us know your favorite book that you discussed with your book group in 2015, as well as what your favorite book that you read in 2015 is. The latter can be your book group selection, or another! You have until Monday, January 11th to share your selections. We look forward to reading what books resonated with you. We'll tabulate your replies and report back in mid-January. One quick thing: Please be careful with the spelling of the book titles and the authors' first and last names to save us editing time!

We have an exciting lineup for January! The first of our FIVE contests this month is a BIG one. Lisa Scottoline’s upcoming book, MOST WANTED, won’t be in stores until April. But we are giving 100(!) groups the chance to win up to 10 advance copies of the book. Lisa excels at intricately plotted thrillers that explore hot-button issues, and her latest does not disappoint. It’s about a couple struggling with fertility who decide to use a donor...only to discover the biological father of their baby may be a serial killer. I read this book over the holidays and appreciated how Lisa clearly captured the anxiety and drama that would accompany this news, quickly drawing readers in. We are looking for groups who will select this as their discussion book for late February, March or April and share their feedback by April 29th. Or another option will be that members of your group can read this book and share their comments with the group coordinator to be sent to us by April 8th. Enter here by Wednesday, February 3rd at noon ET if your group can commit to being part of this specially targeted group of readers.

Lisa Genova’s INSIDE THE O’BRIENS was a New York Times bestseller when it was published last year; I also selected it as a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick. Lisa has a Ph.D. in neuroscience, so it’s no wonder she writes so insightfully about neurological disorders. INSIDE THE O’BRIENS is a powerful and transcendent novel about a family struggling with the impact of Huntington’s disease, and packs the same emotional punch as her beloved STILL ALICE. It’s now out in paperback, and to celebrate we’re giving three groups the chance to win 12 copies. Last year we asked Bookreporter readers to share advance comments about the book, which were raves that you can read here. Enter here by Wednesday, February 3rd at noon ET.

Our next contest is for another of my Bookreporter.com Bets On selections, Christopher Scotton’s THE SECRET WISDOM OF THE EARTH. It’s a dramatic and deeply moving novel about an act of violence in a small, Southern town and the repercussions that will forever change a young man’s view of human cruelty and compassion. We’re giving 25 readers the chance to win a copy; we know once you have finished reading it, you will want to recommend it to your book group. Enter here by Wednesday, February 3rd at noon ET.

In our fourth contest, we’re giving five groups the chance to win up to 10 copies of KATHERINE CARLYLE, plus a visit from its acclaimed author Rupert Thomson. I have had the pleasure of meeting Rupert, and assure you that if he joins you at your meeting, you are in for a complete treat. He met with a group in Westchester when he was in from London a few months ago, and the conversation went on for hours! Thomson is known for his ability to tackle a wide variety of genres and subjects with ease, provoking lots of conversation. Although this latest book is fiction, he was inspired to write it as he thought about his own daughter, who was born via in vitro fertilization (IVF). It's the story of a young woman who was conceived by IVF and ponders the years she lay in a test tube waiting to be born. Now unmoored by the death of her mother, Katherine abandons the set course of her life and goes on a mysterious journey to the ends of the world. Enter here by Wednesday, February 3rd at noon ET for your chance to win a copy and what promises to be a wonderful evening with Rupert.

Our prize book in January’s “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest is THE GUEST ROOM, the provocative new novel by #1 New York Times bestselling author Chris Bohjalian. It's the spellbinding tale of a party gone horribly wrong: two men lie dead in a suburban living room, two women are on the run from police, and a marriage is ripping apart at the seams. We ran a Sneak Peek contest on Bookreporter in October --- where readers share their thoughts in advance of publication --- and feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Click here to see those comments about the latest from this well-loved book group author. As usual, we’re giving three groups the chance to win 12 copies. Enter here by Wednesday, February 3rd at noon ET.

We’re featuring guides this month for three fabulous books. The first is for THE SONG OF HARTGROVE HALL by Natasha Solomons, the New York Times bestselling author of THE HOUSE AT TYNEFORD. Set against the alluring backdrop of an English country, it’s the story of Harry Fox-Talbot and his brothers, who have returned from World War II determined to save their once grand home from ruin. But the arrival of beautiful Jewish wartime singer Edie Rose tangles the threads of love and duty, and leads to a devastating betrayal. Fifty years later, now a celebrated composer, Fox reels from the death of his adored wife, Edie. Until his connection with his four-year old grandson --- a music prodigy --- propels him back into life, and ultimately to confront his past. Fans of “Downton Abbey” will not want to miss this one; the house at Tyneford is spectacular much like Downton. Click here for the featured guide.

We’re also featuring the guide for Sally Hepworth’s THE SECRETS OF MIDWIVES, now available in paperback. It tells the story of three generations of women devoted to delivering new life into the world --- and the secrets they keep. Neva, a third-generation midwife, is determined to keep the details surrounding her own pregnancy --- including the identity of the baby’s father --- hidden for as long as possible. Her mother, Grace, finds it impossible to let this secret rest. For Floss, Neva’s grandmother, Neva’s situation thrusts her back 60 years in time to a secret that eerily mirrors her granddaughter’s --- a secret that, if revealed, will change everything. Click here for the featured guide.

Our final featured guide this month is for THE POCKET WIFE, Susan Crawford’s stylish debut thriller. We had a special contest to celebrate its release in March, and we’re featuring the guide now as it just came out in paperback. It’s the riveting story of Dana Cantrell, a bipolar woman who can't remember if she murdered her friend --- told from her not-always-reliable POV. The closer she comes to piecing together the shards of her broken memory, the more she falls apart. Is there a murderer lurking inside of Dana...or is there one out there in the shadows of reality, waiting to strike again? Click here for the featured guide.

Special Contest: Win Copies of INSIDE THE O'BRIENS by Lisa Genova for Your Group

We are celebrating the paperback release of Lisa Genova's bestselling INSIDE THE O'BRIENS --- a powerful and transcendent novel about a family struggling with the impact of Huntington’s disease --- with a special contest that will give three groups the chance to win 12 copies. To enter, please fill out this form by Wednesday, February 3rd at noon ET.

INSIDE THE O'BRIENS by Lisa Genova (Fiction)
Joe O’Brien is a 44-year-old Boston police officer from the Irish Catholic neighborhood of Charlestown, Massachusetts. A devoted husband, a proud father of four children in their 20s, and a respected, seasoned law enforcement officer, Joe begins experiencing bouts of disorganized thinking, uncharacteristic temper outbursts and strange, involuntary movements. He initially attributes these episodes to aging and the cumulative physical and psychological stress of his job, but as these symptoms worsen, he agrees to see a neurologist and is handed a diagnosis that will change his and his family’s life forever: Huntington’s disease.

Huntington’s is a lethal neurodegenerative disease with no treatment that affects the progression and no cure. And it is genetic. Each of Joe’s four children has a 50 percent chance of inheriting their father’s disease, and a simple blood test can reveal their genetic fate. While watching their potential future in their father’s escalating symptoms, each child struggles with the questions this test imposes on their young adult lives, including his youngest, 21-year-old Katie. Does she want to know? What if she’s gene positive? Can she live with the constant anxiety of not knowing?

As Joe’s symptoms worsen and he’s eventually stripped of his badge and more, Joe struggles to maintain his identity and sense of purpose. How can he find hope in a situation that feels hopeless? How can he find courage without any armor or weapons? What else might he be able to pass down to his children other than a fatal disease? Where is the honor in living and dying with Huntington’s? Each family member must reach deep inside, reexamine their values and the relationships that matter most as they learn to lead lives not defined by fear, but instead, by love.

Praised for writing that “explores the resilience of the human spirit” (The San Francisco Chronicle), Lisa Genova has once again established her talent with INSIDE THE O’BRIENS, a novel as powerful and unforgettable as the human insights at its core.

To enter, please fill out this form by Wednesday, February 3rd at noon ET.

KATHERINE CARLYLE by Rupert Thomson (Fiction)
KATHERINE CARLYLE is Rupert Thomson’s breakthrough novel. Written in the beautifully spare, lucid and cinematic prose Thomson is known for, and powered by his natural gift for storytelling, it uses the modern techniques of IVF to throw new light on the myth of origins. It is a profound and moving novel about identity, the search for personal meaning, and how we are loved.

Unmoored by her mother’s death and feeling her father to be an increasingly distant figure, Katherine Carlyle abandons the set course of her life and starts out on a mysterious journey to the ends of the world. Instead of going to college, she disappears, telling no one where she has gone. What begins as an attempt to punish her father for his absence gradually becomes a testing ground of his love for her, a coming-to-terms with the death of her mother, and finally the mise-en-scène for a courageous leap to true empowerment.

THE GUEST ROOM by Chris Bohjalian (Fiction)
From the New York Times bestselling author of MIDWIVES and THE SANDCASTLE GIRLS comes the spellbinding tale of a party gone horribly wrong: two men lie dead in a suburban living room, two women are on the run from police, and a marriage is ripping apart at the seams.

When Kristin Chapman agrees to let her husband, Richard, host his brother’s bachelor party, she expects a certain amount of debauchery. She brings their young daughter to Manhattan for the evening, leaving her Westchester home to the men and their hired entertainment. What she does not expect is this: bacchanalian drunkenness, her husband sharing a dangerously intimate moment in the guest room, and two women stabbing and killing their Russian bodyguards before driving off into the night.

In the aftermath, Kristin and Richard’s life rapidly spirals into nightmare. The police throw them out of their home, now a crime scene, Richard’s investment banking firm puts him on indefinite leave, and Kristin is unsure if she can forgive her husband for the moment he shared with a dark-haired girl in the guest room. But the dark-haired girl, Alexandra, faces a much graver danger. In one breathless, violent night, she is free, running to escape the police who will arrest her and the gangsters who will kill her in a heartbeat.

A captivating, chilling story about shame and scandal, THE GUEST ROOM is a riveting novel from one of our greatest storytellers.

"With empathy and keen insight, Sally Hepworth delivers a page-turning novel about the complex, lovely, and even heartbreaking relationships between mothers and daughters."
--- Emily Giffin

Three generations of women. Secrets in the present and from the past. A captivating tale of life, loss and love...

Neva Bradley, a third-generation midwife, is determined to keep the details surrounding her own pregnancy --- including the identity of the baby’s father --- hidden from her family and co-workers for as long as possible. Her mother, Grace, finds it impossible to let this secret rest. The more Grace prods, the tighter Neva holds to her story, and the more the lifelong differences between private, quiet Neva and open, gregarious Grace strain their relationship. For Floss, Neva’s grandmother and a retired midwife, Neva’s situation thrusts her back 60 years in time to a secret that eerily mirrors her granddaughter’s --- one which, if revealed, will have life-changing consequences for them all.

As Neva’s pregnancy progresses and speculation makes it harder and harder to conceal the truth, Floss wonders if hiding her own truth is ultimately more harmful than telling it. Will these women reveal their secrets and deal with the inevitable consequences? Or are some secrets best kept hidden?

Dana Catrell’s life is in chaos. She’s married to a lawyer who makes her feel trivial, sticking her inside his pocket like loose change. She’s also sliding towards the brink of insanity. Devastated by mania, a result of her bipolar disorder, Dana finds that there are troubling holes in her memory, including what happened on the afternoon of her friend Celia’s death. She’s horrified to learn she’s the only other person with a key to Celia’s house --- and the last person to see her alive.

She and Celia had shared recipes and gossip. But not secrets --- until that afternoon. Closing her eyes, Dana can see images, loose pieces of a hazy puzzle. Sangria in a glass, a tiny rip in Celia’s screen door, Celia lying in a pool of blood, the broken vase beside her head, the kitchen knife just so above her hand. But there are infuriating, terrifying gaps.

Is murder on her mind --- or is it all in her head?

As evidence starts to point in her direction, Dana will use the clarity her mania brings her to fill in the blanks and clear her name before her demons win out. But her husband’s odd behavior and the persistent probing of Detective Jack Moss complicate Dana’s search for answers. The closer she comes to piecing together shards of her broken memory, the closer Dana comes to falling apart.
