No Popes in Heaven

Speaker of the House lecturing a colleague on why power requires compromise and even corruption to succeed.

“… do you think that great saint, Pope Francis, is above what his power, marshalled in pursuit of the good, requires of him every single day? Does he not have to placate his enemies with appointments they don’t deserve? Do you think he does not have to adopt positions untrue to his own deeply held beliefs just to achieve agreement on other fronts? Do you think he does not sit there, just like me, look at the dream, and ask what distasteful transaction, what compromise, what offense against the rules he must perform to make that dream real for millions of people? Don’t kid yourself, Sam. You are seventy-eight years old and one day soon you will know. There are no popes in heaven.”
