Forget Me Not

Imagine regaining consciousness, bruised and battered, in a wooded area not knowing how you got there. And, worse yet, not knowing who you are or what your name is. Thus begins a young woman’s dangerous journey back to a life that may hold even more threats for her. The one thing she hasn’t lost is her faith in God, and through Him she finds the courage to continue.

As the young woman realizes that she has no memory of who she is or where she is, she begins searching her pockets for a wallet or any clue to her identity. All she finds is a business card from the Crossroads Crisis Center with the name “Susan” written on the back. What she would later think of as a divine appointment, Clyde Parker finds her as he’s walking out his arthritic kinks. He bends to help her and offers to take her to the hospital, but she opts to go straight to the Crisis Center.

The reaction of the staff at the Center is unexpected; they look at her as if they are seeing a ghost. And, indeed, she does resemble the portrait of the center’s deceased founder, Susan Brandt. Susan and her son had been killed three years earlier, leaving behind her legacy and a bereaved husband, Ben, who could not bring himself back to work or to his faith in God. How Ben and the mystery woman become allies and begin to unravel the mysteries that torment both of them is the basis for this gripping plot. A woman’s unshakeable faith in spite of the actual and unknown dangers that face her provides the inspiring theme.

Vicki Hinze uses a writing style that keeps the reader guessing along with the protagonists. However, she does reveal who some of the bad guys are, which allows the reader to vigorously root for their swift demise. It is sometimes difficult to keep all the players straight, but the intricate conspiracies rivet your attention and compel you to keep reading. In addition, it is impossible not to feel both admiration and empathy for the main characters. Ben and the woman of faith who has come bursting into his self-imposed life of isolation are people we would enjoy calling friends.

Hinze has written over 25 books, including romances, thrillers and some nonfiction. FORGET ME NOT is her first Christian-themed thriller, and it combines many elements that have made this relatively new genre so popular. A growing number of readers enjoy a complex suspense story with an underlying romance but would rather not be bombarded with endless obscenities and graphic sexual descriptions. For many years they were offered few choices beyond LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE. So Hinze has added her talent to the growing pool of writers who can combine faith and wholesome values with a rip-roaring good story.
