The Women of Literature

Dorothy Rangel is a member of “The Women of Literature,” a book club formed 14 months ago at her workplace. In this interview, Dorothy explains how their books are chosen and shares some of the memorable titles she and her group have discussed together.

Q: Does your group have a name and/or a theme? How long has your group been in existence?

A: “The Women of Literature.” We have been meeting for 14 months.

Q: How many members do you have? How many men, how many women?

A: Sixteen members, all women.

Q: What age are most of your members? How often do you meet? Where do you meet?

A: Ages 30s to 60s. We meet once a month in the office where we work.

Q: Do you eat at your meetings? What do you eat? Who brings the food?

A: Yes, we eat pizza, pasta and Mexican food. We order out and sometimes have the food catered.

Q: Who leads the discussion? Do you use reading group guides?

A: The facilitator. We use reading group guides some of the time.

Q: What kind of books do you read?

A: A little bit of everything

Q: How do you choose your books? Do you choose one new book at each meeting?

A: We choose books from a list compiled by the members and facilitator. We choose one book at each meeting.

Q: What were some of the best discussions or favorite books the group read?

A: Love, The Shack, The Vanishing Acts of Esme Lennox, The Memory Keeper's Daughter, and Water for Elephants.

Q: How do you keep things fun?

A: By making sure each person is given the opportunity to participate in the group discussion.

Q: What advice would you give to other reading groups?

A: Be receptive to new authors and new ideas for the club.

Q: Do you have any horror stories, amusing anecdotes, or other special tales to tell?

A: Not yet. We have not been meeting long enough.

Q: Is there anything else unique or noteworthy about your group that you would like to share?

A: We are a diverse group of women who happen to work together and enjoy reading.
