Cynthia Thayer was born in New York City but moved with her family to
Nova Scotia when she was seven years old. After earning a college degree
in English and theater, Cynthia became a teacher of both subjects, but
for more than twenty years now she has owned and operated a diversified
organic farm in Goulds-boro, Maine, with her husband.
When she was 48, she began
writing, and of her “new” career, she says, “I guess you could say that
I am a late bloomer…Writing has become part of the ‘new me.”

A few words from Cynthia Thayer: About the “subject” of Strong for Potatoes:
All my life I have been socially and politically active. The novel in a way is about the right to be what you are and be good at it. I wanted Blue to become strong enough to be her own person and she did not disappoint me. About the experience of writing her first novel:
I have loved every moment of writing this book. Some of the time it has been fun and exciting, often agonzing, but always stimulating and impossible to ignore. Feeling the anguish and elation of the characters was an amazing experience.
About the “facts” behind the Strong for Potatoes setting, and the nature of fiction:
Nothing is really true in the book at all. There are no characters or places that are true places. I find fiction truer than fact anyway, and I work better with it. When I started I had no picture of Blue. I started with the twin idea because I’ve always been fascinated by twins…Blue just grew as I wrote.
