Author Biography

A native New Yorker, Brenda Janowitz has had a flair for all things dramatic since she played the title role in her third grade production of Really Rosie.  When asked by her grandmother if the experience made her want to be an actress when she grew up, Brenda responded, “An actress?  No.  A writer, maybe.”

Brenda attended Cornell University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Human Service Studies, with a Concentration in Race and Discrimination.  After graduating from Cornell, she attended Hofstra Law School, where she was a member of the Law Review and won the Law Review Writing Competition.  Upon graduation from Hofstra, she went to work for the law firm Kaye Scholer, LLP, where she was an associate in the Intellectual Property group, handling cases in the areas of trademark, anti-trust, internet, and false advertising.  Brenda later left Kaye Scholer to pursue a federal clerkship with the Honorable Marilyn Dolan Go, United States Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York.

Since her clerkship, Brenda has worked as a career counselor at two New York City law schools, where she published a number of articles on career related issues in publications such as the National Law Journal and the New York Law Journal.  She currently lives in Manhattan where she lectures on the publishing process and teaches creative writing at Mediabistro.

Brenda is the author of Brenda is the author of Jack With a Twist (Engaging your adversary and other things they don’t teach you in law school) and Scot on the Rocks (How I survived my ex-boyfriend's wedding with my dignity ever so slightly intact).  You can learn more about Brenda at www.brendajanowitz.com.

Author Interview

Q: Why did you decide to continue Brooke’s story with the sequel Jack with a Twist?

A: It was a no brainer for me to continue Brooke’s story. I feel so connected to the character, so I knew I had more story to tell. In Jack with a Twist, her best friends are back, and there are also a bunch of new characters for her to have fun with this time around!

Q: Does the story take up immediately after Scot on the Rocks?

A: The story takes up just a few weeks after Scot on the Rocks. I actually just completed work on a short story that fills the gap of the weeks between where Scot on the Rocks leaves off and Jack with a Twist picks up. Red Dress Ink will be published it for free on their website in late July, so click here to read it.

Q: As a lawyer, what did you discover about “Engaging your adversary and other things they don’t teach you in law school”?

A: As a lawyer, I definitely learned that there are lots of things that they don't teach you in law school, but I never engaged my adversary. Well, at least in the sort of thing that would result in a ring on your finger! When I was practising law, I definitely dated lots of fellow lawyers (you work pretty much 24/7, so if you don't date the people you work with, you'll never go out on a date . . . ), but the man I'll be marrying on May 25th (yes, I'm getting married this weekend!) is a doctor.

Q: Any more books on the horizon?

A: I have a few more things that I'm playing around with. I've been working on a Young Adult novel, a women's fiction novel, and I also have the germ of an idea for a children's book. Yes, I'm all over the place! I daydream a lot.

Q: How has life changed for you since our last interview?

A: Life has changed so much! I'm getting married on May 25th and then JACK comes out on June 24. There are just so many wonderful things happening right now - I'm trying not to get stressed out and just enjoy all of these wonderful things.
